City of Huntsville approves engineering contract for Maple Hill Cemetery Scatter Garden

As more families choose cremation over full-service traditional burials, the City is creating a peaceful garden space at Maple Hill Cemetery to say goodbye to a loved one.

Plans for a scatter garden at Maple Hill moved forward following approval of a $19,080 engineering services contract with Schoel Engineering Company. The agreement includes design services, surveying and construction administration and is expected to take about one year.

The project will expand memorial spaces within the historic Maple Hill Cemetery and become the first scatter garden in a City‑owned cemetery. The 81-acre cemetery was established on just two-acres in 1818 and is the oldest and largest cemetery in Huntsville.

“The Maple Hill Scatter Garden will be a place where families can respectfully scatter cremated remains of a loved one and have a peaceful setting to mourn, remember and reflect,” said Tara Sloan, Director of Cemeteries. “We want families to feel comforted here, knowing they have a beautiful, intentional location for scattering cremains and gathering in moments that matter.”
