HPD to strengthen federal partnership through DEA cooperative agreement

Published on

The Huntsville Police Department (HPD) is working to strengthen its efforts to combat drug-related crimes with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The cooperative agreement between the City and federal authorities will formally partner HPD with the DEA’s Huntsville Resident Office Task Force, enhancing the department’s ability to investigate and disrupt drug trafficking organizations operating across north Alabama.

Through this partnership, HPD and the North Alabama Drug Task Force (NADTF) will be able to participate in federal-level investigations targeting supply-level traffickers who distribute narcotics to mid- and high-level dealers in the Huntsville area. The agreement also expands access to federal statutes and resources, allowing cases to be pursued beyond the limitations of local jurisdiction.

The DEA will provide operational support including specialized equipment, training, travel funding and financial resources for covert operations and evidence purchases. DEA Special Agents will also work alongside NADTF personnel, increasing manpower and expertise on complex investigations.

As part of the agreement, HPD will assign at least one experienced officer to serve as a deputized Task Force Officer. In this role, the officer will assist in investigations, conduct enforcement operations, gather intelligence and help build cases for federal prosecution.

The agreement includes funding support for certain operational costs along with access to federal asset forfeiture sharing, which can be reinvested into future law enforcement efforts.
