Rooted in Community: How Goodway Lodge No. 222 Gives Back
Published on
For more than 100 years, Goodway Lodge No. 222 has been a cornerstone of community service in Huntsville. Chartered in 1901 under the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Alabama, the Lodge’s 60 active members live by the principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth—and they put those values into action every day.
From donating school supplies and pantry items to local schools, to adopting families during the holidays, to supporting programs that provide prom dresses for teens, Goodway Lodge has a long history of giving back. Their efforts reflect a deep commitment to charitable outreach and the well-being of Huntsville residents.
In January 2023, the Lodge added another chapter to its story of service by partnering with the City of Huntsville’s Green Team through the Adopt-A-Spot program. They adopted the Oakwood Avenue corridor between Jordan Lane and Pulaski Pike—a stretch of road that holds special meaning for many members who grew up in the area and still call it home.

Every two months, members gather to clean up litter along Oakwood Avenue, collecting multiple bags each time. It’s more than just about road cleanup: it’s about neighborhood pride, preserving the environment and strengthening their bond with the city they love.
Carlton Brooks, who helps lead the effort, says the partnership with Green Team has been a rewarding experience. “This is our community,” he explains. “We want to keep it beautiful for everyone.”

Goodway Lodge No. 222 appreciates the support and resources provided by Green Team, which make these cleanups possible. And they encourage others to get involved, too. If you or your organization want to make a difference, consider adopting a spot through Operation Green Team. It’s a simple way to create a cleaner, greener Huntsville.
